Two big TRAC races are coming up… First, if you’ve never run a trail race, February 11 is a good time to start. The Black Warrior, held in the Bankhead Forest, offers a 25K and 50K. Check out their website at www.blackwarrior50K.com. I’ve run both the 50K and the 25K and can attest that the course is challenging, yet a bunch of fun. The folks that organize the event do a great job each year. The aid stations along the way are normally staffed with experienced runners and volunteers and they do a nice job of encouraging you through each section. At the end of the race, satisfy your hunger with a burger and some hot food. The trail itself is not too technical, though there are sections that require some concentrated navigation. Depending upon the weather, you will likely encounter a little mud and water.
One month later on March 11, the Huff ‘n Puff 15K returns to Sheffield, AL. The women of the Junior League of the Shoals are working hard to put on an event to remember. Work is ongoing to provide participants and the community at large with an expo at the site of the race (Sheffield Recreation Center). You’ll find a link on our calendar that will allow you to register. Running groups such as No Limits Running (check it out on Facebook — link is on Groups page) have started training there. Join a group and practice the route so you’ll be set on race day.
